The NCH Marketing Services’ 2012 coupon facts survey results are in. Can you guess the most popular coupons in America?

Quick coupon facts

According to the NCH coupon survey, there are changes taking place in the way we shop and how we save money. Last year, for instance, shoppers redeemed a total of 4.6 billion dollars in coupons, and nearly 90 percent of those money saving slips of paper came from newspaper inserts. That’s not a new trend, of course. Americans have been clipping coupons from the Sunday paper since the 1940s. What is slowly catching on is the usage of mobile coupons—those unclippable but convenient coupons tethered to your mobile phone. Charles Brown, vice president of marketing at NCH Marketing Services expects mobile coupon usage will increase exponentially in the coming years.

“Digital coupons are expected to continue to grow, but marketers will need to use a mix of coupon distribution media to reach their complete audience and have the most successful results from their coupon promotions,” Brown said.

Eighty percent of those surveyed by NCH Marketing Services claimed to use coupons regularly, a number that’s up more than seventeen percent from the previous year. What are we buying? The survey results show that the most popular coupons in America are used for the purchase of the following items:

  1. 1. Hair care items
  2. 2. Eye care treatments
  3. 3. Candy and gum
  4. 4. Cosmetic purchases
  5. 5. Butters and margarines
  6. 6. Sanitary protection
  7. 7. First aid supplies
  8. 8. Vitamins and supplements
  9. 9. Shaving supplies
  10. 10.Dried fruits

Processed foods are noticeably absent from the list, despite the vast number of coupons for such products in newspaper coupon inserts and online. Patricia Kimbell, nutritionist and professor at the University of Wisconsin, claims that consumers are wising up to the health risks associated with processed foods.

“Processed convenience foods made us fat, slow and unhealthy. Today’s middle aged Americans are being diagnosed with heart disease and diabetes in record numbers, and they’re teaching their children not to rely on such nutritional nightmares.”
